Art Studio Makeover – His and Her Joint Office with Ikea Furniture

It's an artist's dream come true.

My husband and I started planning our home office renovation a year ago. We wanted to take the time to really think about our needs and make sure we picked items that would work well for our needs.

I could go into a long explanation about it all, but I'm guessing that's not why you are here. You're likely here because you saw our office/art studio and wanted to now where you could get something we purchased or what the model is called. I'll explain some things as we go, but without further ado, here's our office renovation.

NOTE: My husband is still working from home due to COVID-19. When we realized he would be working from home longer than just a few weeks, we decided to incorporate a workspace for him to make this a joint workspace rather than just my art studio. Many people have made comments like, "Your husband got the shaft." Yes. Yes he did. It was by design because he wasn't supposed to be in here to begin with ;)

ROOM HISTORY: Our home is a 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath home with 2 "flex" rooms. The first "flex" room is an open loft upstairs that could be converted to a fifth bedroom and the second is this room downstairs which we have always used as an office or an "Oh crap, someone is coming over and we need to pick up as fast as possible so shove everything in here" room.

FURNITURE

ARMOIRE

This was an unexpected purchase that turned into the star of the show. Honestly, having it now, I don't know how we would have finished without it.

PAX Wardrobe: $105, though, we managed to get ours for $69 in the "up to 50% off" section at Ikea. It wasn't damaged, but already built, so it was a bit of a best to get home in our Kia Sedona.

Komplement Shelves: $15 each. We were able to find several of ours in the "up to 50% off" section for $5 each.

Komplement Pull Out Tray: $30 each

Doors: Bergsbo - $60 each

Door Hinges: Komplement Soft Close Door Hinges - $20 per pack (you need one pack for each door)

Handles: Kallror Handles - $10 for a two pack

Here you'll see we have 4 regular shelves and 3 roll out shelves.

I'm not sure if I'll be keeping my Cricut Explore Air 2 which is why it's off to the side. The other roll out is for laying my cut mats and unfinished large scale art that required drying or curing.

SHELVING

We used a combination of shelving unites form the Kallax line to create upper cabinet shelving.

Kallax 2x4 Shelf Unit - $69 (we bought two and hung them on the wall)

Kallax 3x4 Shelf Unit - $99 (this was also hung on the wall but vertically)

We also used a combination of cabinet doors drawer, door, and bottle inserts to customize these shelves. For items we wanted hidden but grouped beyond the doors, we used cube storage bins.

Kallax 2 Drawer Insert - $22

Kallax Door Insert - $17

Kallax Inserts for Bottles - $15

Drona Box in Dark Blue - $3.99

DRAWERS & FLEX SPACE

One thing that was really important to us was to maximize the space in here and make it functional. I knew I wanted to sets of the larger Alex drawers on rollers but what I didn't know until we put them in and had an extra desktop was that making this into a super functional work top that could be moved around the room would make a GREAT idea. I used some 'L' brackets we already had to secure it to the back and some 3M tape to tack it down in front.

Alex Drawer Unit on Casters: $129 each

Linnmon Table Top 47.25" - $22.99

DESKS & STORAGE

Let me explain. I ruin things very easily with how messy my art can get. I didn't want furniture I was going to stain with alcohol ink or ruin with resin slop that I would have a heart attack or break the bank replacing, so we opted for Ikea furniture, including desk tops. They're not expensive and they match everything else.

I did have to use a table saw to cut down my husband's desk as well as a Lack end table to make him a little "L" shaped setup over there.

Linnmon 78.75" Table Top - $47.99

Linnmon 47.25" Table Top - $22.99

Linnmon 59.25" Table Top - $29.99

Alex Add On Unit - $49.99

Adils - $4 each

Lack End Table - $9.99

CUTTING LINNMON DESK TOPS

I did a lot of reading on the internet about cutting Ikea desk tops and the general consensus was... don't do it. Being the rebel I am, I ignored the advice and did it anyway. It wasn't hard but you do need some proper tools. Here are my best tips on cutting an Ikea desk top.

  • Use a 'T' square to draw a straight line to cut along.
  • Use masking tape you can see through and tape over the line all the way around the table.
  • Use a table saw and cut slowly.

ACCESSORIES

NOT PICTURED

One thing we are hoping to add soon for my husbands desk is a set of Alex drawers. Our Ikea sells out of them in about 15 minutes when they do finally get them in stock so if you're not one of the lucky ones the website actually notifies when they come back in stock, then you're SOL. I do have one set of Alex drawers with a filing cabinet that I've had for awhile that I use for all of my nail/dip powder organization, but we'd like to get a regular Alex drawer set for my husband to have drawers.
