It’s day 3 of head shot week! On Monday, I talked about the three head shots a professional needs. Tuesday, I gave you a glimpse of a typical head shot session and what the process looks like with Jen Shannon Portrait. Today, I have Jill Stonier, Professional Makeup Artist guest posting on the importance of skincare for a flawless makeup application. Please keep in mind that these are mere suggestions, not requirements. As professionals, we can work with anyone. These are suggestions on how to get THE BEST result. Jill, take it away!

Thanks for having me on your blog! I hope your readers find this informative. Jen and I have worked together for going on 7 years. During this time, we’ve worked with women of all shapes, sizes, colors, and skin varieties for photography makeup applications.
One of the biggest problems I see is women not taking proper care of their skin. They sleep in makeup, they don’t exfoliate or moisturize, and they don’t know where to start with any of that. That’s where I come in. You may have noticed uneven texture, excess flakiness, or maybe you’ve broken out more than you would like. I mean, let’s get real. NONE of us LIKE to break out, right? Many women experience hormonal outbreaks and age doesn’t discriminate! Even my clients with more mature skin can have outbreaks due to hormonal shifts. With a good skincare routine, you’ll be on the right track to getting healthier, glowing skin, perfect for makeup application for photography.
Jen always advises her clients to come in with a clean face, however, women who aren’t used to a skincare routine may not realize that a clean face means one that is cleansed, exfoliated, and moisturized.
Makeup wipes are ineffective tools for cleansing and I do not recommend them as a routine. To me, wipes are a last or on the go resort. Instead, I recommend starting with a cleanser dedicated to your skin type, whether oily, dry, or combo. There are many different types so knowing your skin is imperative. For example, if you are sensitive, you may want to find a cleanser that is soap free and does not include artificial fragrances and colors. A good overall cleanser is the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel. It is soap free and cleanses all skin conditions. It has a refreshing lather and thoroughly removes impurities without disturbing the skin’s natural moisture balance. This isn’t a product you will be able to find at your local drugstore, however you can purchase it through any Dermalogica retailer. If finding an in person retailer is inconvenient, my online store includes Dermalogica products such as the special cleansing gel. There are many other formulations I would be happy to discuss with you. Feel free to contact me to schedule a consultation.
The next step towards better skin health is exfoliating. Exfoliating will slough off the dead skin cell layer, which resurfaces and smooths the skin. This allows product, especially moisturizer, to better penetrate the skin giving the skin a healthy glow and a better makeup application. There are many exfoliants on the market. One of my favorites is the Daily Superfoliant by Dermalogica. This powerful resurfacer is optimal for everyday use, unveiling smoother and more purified skin. Active ingredients like enzymes with alphahydroxy acids travel deep into the pores and flush out harmful pollutants that lead to premature aging.
The last step towards better skin health is moisturizing. It helps to smooth fine lines, promote elasticity, and help with dehydration. One of my favorite overall moisturizers is the Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream. It is a medium weight moisturizer that balances combination/dry skin. It nourishes, soothes and hydrates to help moisturize and contains antioxidants which help fight free radicals. Again, it is important to know your skin because not all moisturizers are tailored for your best skin health. Booking a consultation with me will allow me to look at your skin and better advise what products would be best for you and your skin type.
One of the best treatments on the market that I highly recommend and can perform on you is a HydraFacial Treatment. A HydraFacial is a medical grade, facial resurfacing treatment that can be given in as little as 30 minutes. It promotes long-term skin health benefits and can be tailored to meet the specific needs of all skin types. This multi-step treatment cleanses, evenly exfoliates and extracts to remove impurities and dead skin cells while simultaneously replenishing vital nutrients including antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid. The HydraFacial offers instant, noticeable results with no downtime or discomfort. HydaFacials should be done seasonally but can be done as often as once per month. Because there is no down time, you can schedule it several days before your shoot and have photo ready skin.
As a licensed esthetician and skincare specialist, I highly recommend stopping in for a consultation to best provide you with tips and product recommendations on what would be best for your skincare health and routine. Again, healthier skin leads to a more flawless makeup application. For more information, stop by my website at www.JillStonier.com.
